Retrofit smart switches or full rewiring: which is right for your home?

Many people in Hyderabad put off home automation because they think it means breaking walls and rewiring. For most homes it does not. This guide explains the difference between retrofit smart switches and a rewired smart home, and how to decide.

What a retrofit smart switch is

A retrofit smart switch is a small Wi-Fi module that sits inside your existing switchboard, behind the switch plate. It connects to the wiring that is already there. Your wall switches keep working, and the same light, fan or socket can now also be controlled from a phone app, by voice through Amazon Alexa, or on a schedule.

Humina modules by KS Enterprises are built this way, which is why we can make a home smart without rewiring it.

When you do not need rewiring

  • Your switchboards and wiring are in normal working condition.
  • You want to keep the look of your current switches.
  • You live in a rented flat and need something that can be removed later.
  • You want to start small and add rooms over time.

When new wiring or new panels make sense

  • The house is being built or fully renovated, so walls are open anyway.
  • Existing wiring is old, damaged or unsafe. Fix this first, smart or not.
  • You want a new premium look, such as glass touch panels, across the home.

What we check during a site visit

  • Whether a neutral wire is available in each switchboard (most Indian boards have one).
  • Space inside the switch box for the module.
  • Wi-Fi coverage in every room you want to automate.
  • Which loads are heavy (geyser, AC) and need heavy-load modules.

What happens if the internet goes down

With retrofit modules your wall switches keep working normally. Only app and voice control pause until the connection returns, and nothing needs to be reset.

Quick answers

Do smart switches need rewiring?

+

Usually not. Retrofit smart switch modules fit behind existing switch plates and use the existing wiring. Rewiring is only needed if the current wiring is unsafe or you are renovating.

Can smart switches be removed when I move house?

+

Yes. Retrofit modules can be taken out and the switchboard returns to how it was, which makes them a good choice for rented homes.

Do I need a neutral wire for smart switches?

+

Most smart switch modules need a neutral. Most Indian switchboards already have one available, and our technician checks this during the free site visit.
