Cove and false ceiling lighting: a practical guide before you build

Cove lighting is the soft glow from a groove in the false ceiling, and it is one of the most requested upgrades in Hyderabad homes. Getting it right is mostly about decisions made before the ceiling is closed. This guide covers the choices that matter most.

Plan the lighting before the ceiling goes up

The best time to plan cove lighting is with your false ceiling contractor, before the boards are fixed. The cove depth, the position of the driver and the wiring path are all much easier to get right at that stage. Changing them after the ceiling is painted means cutting and patching.

Warm, neutral or cool light?

  • Warm white (around 2700 K to 3000 K): cosy and relaxed. Most popular for bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Neutral white (around 4000 K): clean and natural. Good for kitchens, study areas and offices.
  • Cool white (around 6000 K to 6500 K): bright and bluish. Often used in work areas, but can feel harsh at home in the evening.
  • Tunable or RGB strips let you change the colour, which suits living rooms and home theatres.

LED strip or profile light?

An LED strip inside a cove gives indirect light that washes the ceiling. A profile light is an aluminium channel with a diffuser that shows a clean, continuous line of light, often recessed into the ceiling or wall. Many designs combine both: cove strips for ambient light and profile lines as a feature.

Why the driver matters more than people expect

LED strips run on a driver (power supply). A poor driver is the most common reason cove lights flicker, change colour or fail early. Choose a good quality driver of the right rating, and make sure it is placed where it can be reached for service, not sealed permanently inside the ceiling.

Make it smart from day one

If you wire the cove on its own circuit, it can be controlled with a Humina smart switch: dim it for a movie, switch it on by voice with Alexa, or turn it on at sunset. It costs far less to plan this before the ceiling is closed than to add it later.

Quick answers

Which colour is best for cove lighting in a bedroom?

+

Warm white, around 2700 K to 3000 K, is the most popular for bedrooms because it feels relaxed in the evening. Tunable strips let you switch between warm and neutral.

How is cove lighting priced?

+

Mainly by the running length of the cove and the quality of the LED strip and driver. KS Enterprises measures the ceiling and quotes per room.

Can cove lights be controlled with Alexa?

+

Yes, if the cove is on its own circuit. A Humina smart switch on that circuit lets you control it from the app, by Alexa voice commands, or on a schedule.
